Books Under Review for Possible Banishment in A School District in Florida

In Florida, the school board in Polk County is reviewing 16 books that are currently in their schools’ libraries. These books are under fire due to a group named County Citizens Defending Freedom who believes the reading material is inappropriate for children.  The CCDF states, “The books identified by CCDF-USA imprint obscene, violent, pornographic, drug abuse, sexual abuse and suicide-related content upon the minds of minor students.”

Interestingly, a large amount of the books involves LGBTQ+ issues, which is not surprising due to a bill that is being considered in Florida. It would ban any talk of sexual orientation or gender identity. There are also books that are considered triggering for the racially sensitive and books that discuss mental health issues.

Here is the list of 16 books facing possible banishment:

10. “Drama” by Raina Telgmeier
11. “Nineteen Minutes” by Jodi Picoult
12. “More Happy Than Not” by Adam Silvera
13. “Beloved” by Toni Morrison
14. “The Bluest Eyes” by Toni Morrison
15. “Tricks” by Ellen Hopkins
16. “Almost Perfect” by Brian Katcher
